Treatment of Autism with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Treatment of Autism with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a procedure which involves electromagnetic fields. The treatment is used to stimulate neurons or nerve cells in the human brain. The treatment is now being used to treat severe mental or neurological health conditions by many professional psychiatrists around the world.

The ongoing research on treating the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) through TMS is still in its early stage. Out of many studies that have been conducted so far, some of these suggest that Transcranial magnetic stimulation can be used to treat symptoms like repetitive behaviors and irritability. This, in turn, helps in improving the disabilities related to autism in social and hand coordination aspects.

However, during the research process, there were some limitations which were considered for safety purposes. While there is a lot of fuss about the remarkable positive results that some of the participants experienced after TMS, this procedure is still not a final solution to treat the debilitating symptoms of autism.

Behaviors which can be improved with TMS

Considering the range of symptoms of autism, no one can claim to treat all of them by applying TMS at a particular part of the brain. However, the treatment can be used to treat some of the symptoms but which symptoms are more or less responsive to TMS is still undecided.

Researchers believe that the right candidates for this treatment are the adolescents. However, there is still a need to conduct larger research studies that would provide results for both adults and children groups.

Despite the initial stage of the research and development, TMS seems like a promising treatment for ASD in the near future. Hopefully, the result of these studies will be more effective and safe and TMS will arise as another solution for people having ASD.
