The Tolerability and Safety of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

TMS – Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation — is one of the most effective therapies to treat depression and has already been approved by the FDA.

This therapy is commonly used to treat the patients who suffer from treatment-resistant depression and who have failed to receive effective results from previous therapies or anti-depressant medications.

Even though there have been no reported side effects of this therapy such as sexual dysfunction, weight gain, sedation, dry mouth, nausea etc, the complete effectiveness of the treatment can only become clear by including the safety and tolerability, as well as the efficacy aspects.

TMS Application and Safety

Even in this context, TMS therapy appears to be a relatively reasonable, safe and well-tolerated treatment. However, the most commonly associated effects of this therapy involve problems with the coil placement. And this causes a temporary pain or discomfort at the placement areas.

The pain usually occurs due to the application of intense magnetic pulses. However, the discomfort continues for a short period of time. To help patients in managing this pain, various parameters are temporarily adjusted.

These adjusting parameters include altering the rotation of the coil or angle, lowering the intensity of the stimulation, or by changing the location slightly. The pain is due to the rich innervation of this area and as some nerve branches cause muscle contraction around the eyes, teeth and nose sensation or even tearing.

Typically, the issues are mild in severity and slowly subside in a few starting treatment sessions. Moreover, it is safe to use the different analgesics such as ibuprofen or aspirin as the pretreatment and may successfully preclude a headache, even, later on, to manage the pain as it occurs.

There are many ongoing projects to further refine the TMS application. These projects aim at achieving therapeutic enhancements that would further help in removing these trivial discomforts completely.
