The Effectiveness of Ketamine IV Infusion Therapy in Elderly Patients

Until now, ketamine has had promising results in treating young patients with severe depression. However, the treatment is now showing remarkable results among elderly patients too.

Typically, the treatment of illnesses in elderly patients with a new medication is much harder. One reason for this is that elderly patients tend to have other medical problems as well, and sometimes the new medication interferes with other medical conditions, creating more problems.

Therefore, before officially introducing a medicine to this age group, it is important to test the results.

As per the control trials run by researchers in Australia though, ketamine proved to be all safe and effective among elderly patients.

And surprisingly, the results of the Ketamine IV infusion therapy among elderly patients is as effective as it is in younger patients of depression.

The Promising Results of Ketamine IV Infusion Therapy among the Elderly

The results of the study show that more than 60% of the elderly patients reported significant improvement of the condition as they got treated with ketamine. And in just six months’ time, almost 40% of the subjects had already gotten over the symptoms of depression.

The way ketamine has effectively worked for elderly patients is a great hope towards further advancement of this treatment among other age groups as well. Moreover, the patients are getting a very powerful and rapid effect just after a single dose of the medication.

The highlights of the study suggest that ketamine can be given to patients in a variety of ways and not just intravenously. This will also help in adjusting the dosage as per the patient’s need. That is; if the patient’s depression is more resistant, the higher the dose will be for the treatment.

Although the risks of ketamine are still to be understood properly, the results of these studies have given a glimmer of hope to the elderly patients who have been suffering from treatment-resistant depression for long.
